New Words

Filed under: Culture — Diana Condolo @ 11:40 am

Society is changing rapidly. Whenever things change we need new words to express our changed world, words that help to describe our thoughts and experiences. I almost aways have my phone on vibrate because I don’t think everyone needs to know when I receive a call (it seems that many people would disagree - like that fellow in the row behind me at the theater), but I have this odd sensation that it is vibrating, usually when it is not. This sensation is particularly problematic when I am on the bus - I mistake the vibrations of the bus for my cell phone. I am not the only one who experiences this phenomenon and so someone has come up with a word for it: vibranxiety. Great. Now we have a new anxiety to search a cure for. What do you think a therapist would advise someone complaining of vibranxiety? To set the phone to ring instead.

Bottled water is becoming ever popular, even though it is really bad for the environment. With this rise in popularity a new type of restaurant sommelier is appearing on the scene: The water sommelier who advises patrons on pairing water with their meals. You can choose an artesian mineral water bottled from an aquifer deep in the Andes or a low-mineral water taken from icebergs in Newfoundland. Confused about your choices? Don’t worry the sommelier will advise you. And what happens if the water does not appeal to your highly evolved taste buds? At least it can be used to water the plants…you can’t do that with rejected wine.
