EI Will Soon Rule the World

Filed under: Eeks! — Diana Condolo @ 6:21 pm

When Elvis died there were 100 Elvis impersonators.
10 years after he died there were 10,000 impersonators.
Now there are 50,000 - 85,000 (depends on who is counting and how).
If this continues at such an alarming rate, by the year 2020 one in ten people on planet earth will be an Elvis Impersonator (one third according to The Naked Scientists).

Elvis impersonators come in all sizes and variations:

  • an Elvis on stilts
  • a ten member elite Elvis parachute team
  • a lesbian Elvis who calls herself Elvis Herselvis
  • a Mexican Elvis aka El Vez, who shares the stage with his three “Elvettes” Priscillita, Gladysita, and Lisa Marie
  • and we suspect that when we finally land on Mars we will find some ….Alien Elvis Impersonators

Some people use the plural term Elvii for multiple Elvis impersonators, but this is not grammatically correct. According to the Wikipedia, the plural form is Elves.

“If life was fair, Elvis would still be alive and all the impersonators dead” –Johnny Carson

Remembering Pumpkin’s Homecoming

Filed under: Purrr — Diana Condolo @ 5:23 pm

How well I remember bringing Pumpkin home for the first time. It was a cool October day in 1996. I was visiting my sister and her family when they told me they were going to feed a stray cat and her litter of kittens. Being a cat lover I went along to have a look at the cuties. It was love at first sight. Each kitten was adorably cute but the runt of the litter just looked so helpless and little. She would be pushed away by her larger siblings and not be able to drink her mother’s milk. Life would be a very big struggle for such a tiny kitty who didn’t have a good home for warmth and shelter. How she pulled my heart strings in all the right ways. I petted her and she took to me right away. I picked her up and she snuggled against my chest trying to get as close as possible to my warmth. She was so small that she fit in a single hand. I stroked her head and she looked up at my eyes with appreciation. Those darling glowing eyes. She did not want to go back down to the ground and I did not want to leave her. We were a match made in heaven. We went home in a cab basking in each other’s warmth. She was very happy to just snuggle up to me. Not a worry in her head.

Here is a photo taken around December. I guess she would have been around 3 or 4 months old.

As the World Computes

  • According to surveys, 15% of Americans say they are addicted to email.
  • Of those who use portable devices to check email, 12% have checked their email at church.
  • Even though 89% of Americans say that texting while driving is dangerous, 57% admit to doing it.
  • Anyone remember my blog entry where I commented that cellphones are the new cigarettes? Well this just reinforces the idea: Just 2 weeks after smoking was banned in public enclosed areas in the UK, text messaging increased by 7.5 million! The steep increase in texting is attributed to smokers who need something to do with their hands when they can’t light up.

Keep Enjoying Facebook

For many people using Facebook is a way of life. We use it to keep in touch with friends through messages, wall posts, and status updates. We amuse one another with pictures, videos, graffiti, and music. We compare tastes by comparing our movie ratings, favorite music lists, and personality profiles. We check in with friends first thing in the morning and before going to bed. In short, we really like Facebook and the added dimension it adds to our life. Today I found out that there are 13 reasons your Facebook account will be disabled. You may want to read the article to make sure you aren’t breaking any rules and lose your account.

The powers that be at Facebook headquarters have decided that users cannot have more than 5,000 friends. I wonder if anyone has reached that quota. I know some people are trying!!!

A Very Public Discussion About My Hair

Filed under: Culture — Diana Condolo @ 2:57 pm

I care how my hair looks. Sometimes it doesn’t look very nice and I can shrug my shoulders and live with it as best as I can, avoiding all cameras because I don’t want to remember the bad hair day for the rest of my days on this planet. It also matters to me what my friends think about my hair. I know, I know, Geeky generally does what she wants to do, because she is pretty independant minded, as long as she is not hurting anyone she will follow her own tune. But she does listen to others, especially people she cares about.

For a couple of years I styled my hair straight, and it was great. However, sometimes I felt like I was fighting a losing battle since my hair is a bit curly, so whenever I straightened it would take any opportunity to get curly again. You might know what humid summers we have in Toronto …. do you know what that does to curl prone hair? It makes it curl. So after a while I decided to let my hair do what it does naturally and this is the result:

Me with curly hair

The only trouble is that my hair has a tempermental curl. Somedays it would get very curly and other days it would barely curl and on those days I would not know how to style my hair that day. My hair is also quite thick and it would take 2 to 3 hours to let it dry naturally. Somedays people would ask me why I don’t style my hair like I used to; with the angled cut and straightened out. I guess they were implying that my hair did not look very good that day. I thought it was just a gentle way to suggest I looked better in those straight hair days. Being a conscientious person that I am I pondered the issue; weighing the pros and cons. Should I go for what is convenient for me or should I please my friends. Which style is the best style for me. I took some photos and analyzed them. I then made the decision to go straight again and this is the result:

Me with straight hair

The sad thing is that you cannot please everyone. Some people are telling me curly is better. Well this public discourse is good and healthy for society. Everyone should be heard and I am glad people feel so passionately about my hair. But I think this haircut is a win-win situation for the pro-curly and the anti-curly as I can also let my hair go curly with this haircut, whenever I feel the urge.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their feedback. It is very much appreciated. Geeky cat is truly touched by everyone’s attention and concern. Here’s to wishing everyone a happy hair day!

Taking a Farm Trip is a Breathe Fresh Air

Filed under: Culture — Diana Condolo @ 5:00 pm

This weekend I had opportunity to visit two Simcoe County farms where I learned about organic growing methods and the intricacies of farming in general.

At the Cookstown Greens we learned about the advantages of buying locally grown foods. Here are a few:

  • Locally grown food is tastier and more nutritious because it doesn’t travel long distances so it is fresher. The longer a vegetable sits the more of its sugars are converted to starches and it loses more nutrients. Foods imported from other countries are picked before they are ripe and are forced to ripen during shipping.
  • Transporting food is a major source of Canada’s greenhouse gases. It takes a lot of energy to transport food: It takes 435 calories of energy to move a 7 calorie strawberry from California to Toronto.
  • Locally grown food preserves genetic diversity.
  • Locally grown food is typically GMO-free.

We also learned that the 90s was a cheap food era — people just wanted food that didn’t cost much. But we are currently going through a food renaissance — people want quality produce that tastes good as well being nutritious. Many people are going to the market to look for specialty produce to put on their table and chefs are interested in using unusual varieties of vegetables in their cuisine. The Cookstown farmer said he was always on the lookout for novel vegetables, though most “new” vegeĀtables have been around for hundreds of years. He searches catalogues and directories from around the world for something to satisfy our palate such as Garlic Scapes, Radish Pods, Garnishing Greens, Summer Nugget Squash, smooth Jerusalem Artichokes and colorful Winter Radishes. I saw All Blue potatoes blue potatoand Roseval with red skin and marbled yellow flesh . As we walked along we plucked the green beans, the tomatoes and absolutely anything we thought was edible and tasted them as fresh as they could possibly be. Sadly, I missed out on the chocolate mint though. This is how it is described: chocolate mint has the always-enchanting aroma of chocolate combined with a bright spearmint taste.

We had a beautiful tour of the farm. There were flowers scattered around the area to attract specific bugs that keep pesty critters away. They grew edible flowers to add to salads (it looks very pretty!) and decorate cakes with.

We had lunch in a picturesque restaurant with foods made from the produce from the farm we had just visited.

In the afternoon we went to an organic apple farm where we were free to try any apple we wanted. I love apples, so I munched constantly, particularly enjoying the apple the grower called George :-)

She explained how there are a number of viable options for insect control. Producers can use oil spray to control mites and aphids and a clay product to control apple maggot. I always wondered what the white stuff on apples was. She said that she did not have a big catepillar problem — she was able to just pluck them off the tree herself. She is one very busy woman as she makes the apple cider to send to health food stores herself.

We came back to Toronto appreciating the work that goes into growing our food, the amount of knowledge it takes to run a farm, and the sheer variety of produce that we have never had the opportunity to sample. We are glad that concerned farmers are growing foods that are healthy for the aware consumer and doing minimal damage to the environment. I hope you get a chance to explore a farm near you and start to feel connected to the foods you eat.

Photographs From Childhood

Filed under: Events — Diana Condolo @ 5:40 am

Here I am walking down my driveway pulling my wooden ducky along. I loved that duck and I kept it for a long time. Look how shiny it was:
