A Very Public Discussion About My Hair

Filed under: Culture — Diana Condolo @ 2:57 pm

I care how my hair looks. Sometimes it doesn’t look very nice and I can shrug my shoulders and live with it as best as I can, avoiding all cameras because I don’t want to remember the bad hair day for the rest of my days on this planet. It also matters to me what my friends think about my hair. I know, I know, Geeky generally does what she wants to do, because she is pretty independant minded, as long as she is not hurting anyone she will follow her own tune. But she does listen to others, especially people she cares about.

For a couple of years I styled my hair straight, and it was great. However, sometimes I felt like I was fighting a losing battle since my hair is a bit curly, so whenever I straightened it would take any opportunity to get curly again. You might know what humid summers we have in Toronto …. do you know what that does to curl prone hair? It makes it curl. So after a while I decided to let my hair do what it does naturally and this is the result:

Me with curly hair

The only trouble is that my hair has a tempermental curl. Somedays it would get very curly and other days it would barely curl and on those days I would not know how to style my hair that day. My hair is also quite thick and it would take 2 to 3 hours to let it dry naturally. Somedays people would ask me why I don’t style my hair like I used to; with the angled cut and straightened out. I guess they were implying that my hair did not look very good that day. I thought it was just a gentle way to suggest I looked better in those straight hair days. Being a conscientious person that I am I pondered the issue; weighing the pros and cons. Should I go for what is convenient for me or should I please my friends. Which style is the best style for me. I took some photos and analyzed them. I then made the decision to go straight again and this is the result:

Me with straight hair

The sad thing is that you cannot please everyone. Some people are telling me curly is better. Well this public discourse is good and healthy for society. Everyone should be heard and I am glad people feel so passionately about my hair. But I think this haircut is a win-win situation for the pro-curly and the anti-curly as I can also let my hair go curly with this haircut, whenever I feel the urge.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their feedback. It is very much appreciated. Geeky cat is truly touched by everyone’s attention and concern. Here’s to wishing everyone a happy hair day!

Well you must realize you can’t please everyone but then why care what they think….you being so independent minded should do what YOU think looks best. I personally go for the wash and wear hairdo. I don’t have time to look at myself and some days don’t even comb my hair. I love my naturally wavy thick hair. Many people would love to have this head of hair…especially those who have straight and thin hair. I think your natural hair is beautiful. No need to spend time worrying and styling…go for the natural look.

My hair is thicker than your hair and it gets a little difficult to manage if I let it get long. Many people comment on my hair. Some like it curly others like it straight. Our sister Ivana said to not cut my hair. I did what I thought was best. I like to change my hairstyle once in a while and this hair cut feels very light and funky. I like it and that is really what matters. My mother gave my hair cut the two thumbs up. She said I look like a 10 year old (hehehehe).

    :D,
It’s very shiny and looks free of mange. I too would like shiny and mange free hair. Do you use pet shampoo? And would I have to go out and buy….what do you call that thing…a comb?

ps I’m sure Alan Thicke would really like this haircut and give it the old “Thicke Approved” stamp of approval.

My cats look beautiful, shiny, and mange free without any products at all. They just use their tongue and paw. :-)

My hair doesn’t look so thick because I keep it longer than your hair BUT IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO COMB AND CONDITIONERS DON’T SEEM TO WORK….WELL I CAN’T LICK MY HAIR LIKE A CAT DOES. BUT I DO LOVE MY HAIR AND WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL MY MOTHER MADE ME KEEP IT SHORT AND I HATED IT AND WOULD STARE AT ALL THE GIRLS WITH LONG HAIR AND WISH IT WERE ON MY HEAD. I HAVE COARSE AND POREEEEEESSSS HAIR. IT SUCKS EVERYTHING UP LIKE AS IF IT WERE A STRAW. WELL IF MA LIKES IT THEN ALL IS WELL….SHE HAS GREAT STYLE!!!
